Accessible Playground Equipment

Ability Shetland was delighted to see the first wheelchair swing in Shetland installed and ready to use in Waas.  Alongside this addition to the existing playpark equipment, the SIC has also installed a nest swing and accessible roundabout, meaning children and young people can all play together with no one being left behind.  These additions to the playpark are going to be such as asset to the community and we look forward to seeing more playparks getting more accessible play equipment throughout the whole of Shetland!

“As a family in Shetland with a child who is a fulltime wheelchair user we have come to find there is a lack of accessible play equipment across the entire island, meaning our son often has to watch his brothers play on equipment he cannot use when we visit playparks. Although we always find a way to have fun, it’s hard to see places made for children to play that have missed out those with a physical disability in their planning. We are beyond delighted to see new play equipment become available that lets all of our children play together and experience a playpark where everyone can be included.

To see our twins play together, one who can run and one who can roll, is a huge gift! We look forward to seeing more accessible play equipment appear in the future” – Emily Jamieson, parent (Hunter and Magnus Jamieson’s mam), Clousta.
